One way I like to formatively assess is through the classic Jeopardy style game. I can ask those DOK 1 and 2 questions of my students and get real time feedback through their answers. I often manipulate the setup of the game based on need. If it is a mid-point check of concepts, I will pair my students up so they can use each other as a resource to answer questions. If it is closer to the end of a unit and we are focused preparing for a summative assessment, I will give each student a white board and have them answer individually. I keep my clipboard handy so I can track those students who are struggling and meet in a small group to address misconceptions.

(When you click the link, it will take you to a View Only version of the board. Make a copy and add it to your Google Drive to edit. Each link on the main board is attached to a certain slide in the presentation. Slides 2-26 are labeled for you to add your questions and each has a return arrow to take you back to the original game board.)
Another way I like to get students involved in game time test prep is through sites like Kahoot!, Quizizz, and Plickers. These sites allow teachers to create selected response questions to help students gauge their understanding of content (Kahoot! now has a Jumble style, in addition to their classic quiz style, where students can put responses into the correct order). The students love the integration of technology being added and enjoy competing against their classmates in the game. While I don't like to have my students compete against one another, I have them track their score to compete against themselves throughout the course of the quarter. They really enjoy seeing their score go up, which means they are getting a better understanding of content.

Happy gaming! Your students will love it.
